Mount Batur is an active volcano in Bali. On Wednesday we rose at 1:00am to make the drive to the base where we began our journey to the top on foot. The trek is classed as difficult which we definitely came to understand from the get go! It's steep, rocky, and slippery at times but we eventually made it to the top in time to see the sunrise. Despite it being a bit of a cloudy morning, it was still a spectacular site.
From the top we could see the neighbouring Mount Agung which is the largest mountain in Bali and homes the island's holiest temple.
After sunrise our guide cooked us eggs and bananas from the steam produced in a small crater type hole in the side of the mountain.
We then trekked down to the largest of the mountain's 7 craters which last erupted in 2000.
Nearby the crater is also a cave which spans 60 metres into the side of the mountain. The cave is a temple and so, being a holy place, we could not go inside.
Once we made it back down we headed over to the natural hot springs. The water was so nice and refreshing after the morning's 16km hike!
It was well worth the early morning and hard work to the top.
